Who on earth was Jesus – and does it matter?

David Boulton
is the author of Who On Earth was Jesus? (O-Books, 2008), a survey of scholarship on the historical Jesus which has been described as “brilliant and timely” by Richard Holloway and has been very positively received by radical and conservative readers alike. David has been a print and broadcast journalist in the UK for most of his career. He is best known today for his books and articles exploring and promoting a brand of open-minded humanism that rejects supernaturalist religion but respects and celebrates the best of our religious heritage and tradition in so far as it offers an enabling dream of what he calls “the republic of heaven”.

Picnic Point
Conference Centre is situated on the edge of the Great Dividing Range and offers panoramic views of Tabletop Mountain and the Lockyer Valley. The Conference will be held one week before Toowoomba’s Carnival of Flowers commences, so the city will be resplendent: display and competition gardens will be open and city parks will be awash with colour.

Program Outline
Friday night (7.30-9.30pm) – David Boulton ‘Who on earth was Jesus?: the scholarship and research’.
Saturday (9.00am-9.30pm) – David Boulton ‘Does Jesus matter anymore?’; discussion and workshop sessions; Jesus at the movies.
Sunday (9.00am – 12.30pm) – Final workshop session; panel session.

There will be two of these sessions. Anticipated topics: Jesus, belief and the human brain; the value of apocalyptic agony: why visions of apocalypse are essential to ethical and political virtue; Jesus and democracy - are they compatible?; the gulf between piety and scholarship; imaging God; and religion and authority - the saga of St Mary’s South Brisbane. Please indicate your preferences on the registration form.
