Is this the pathetic result of the decline in organised religion? The crowd, including our own PM, went bananas for Oprah in Melbourne yesterday. The pseudo-science-peddling small-screen queen bestows mystical experience upon the faithful: ''The universe is bringing her to me,'' one adoring fan is quoted as saying.
Perhaps GK Chesterton is right after all: when people stop believing in God, they don't believe in nothing. They believe in anything.
What could be more absurd in 2011 than believing in the "resurrection of Jesus" (which never happened),
the mommy-daddy santa claus creator-God. Or in the case of "catholics" that the pope is the "vicar of Christ", or that the catholic magisterium is the only source of Truth in the world, or even a source of Truth with a capital T.
And yet many "catholics" who revere and quote Chesterton believe exactly that.

Perhaps adulation of the celebrities has always been with us? It may be a hard-wired propensity.
